Τὸν υἱόν της τὸν καπετὰν Κομνιανὸν τὸν ἐπαντρολογοῦσεν ἤδη ἡ γρια-Κομνιανάκαινα, ἂν 〈καὶ〉 δὲν εἶχε χρονίσει ἀκόμη ἡ νύμφη της, ἡ μακαρῖτις. Τὰ δύο ὀρφανά, μία κόρη ὀκταέτις καὶ ἓν τετραετὲς παιδίον, ἐφόρουν μαῦρα, κατάμαυρα, ὁποὺ ἐστενοχώρουν κ᾽ ἐχλώμιαιναν τὰ πτωχὰ κάτισχνα κορμάκια των, καὶ ἦτον καημὸς καρδιᾶς νὰ τὰ βλέπῃ τις. Ἐνθύμιζαν τὸ δημῶδες δίστιχον:

Βαρύτερ᾽ ἀπ᾽ τὰ σίδερα εἶναι τὰ μαῦρα ροῦχα,
γιατὶ τὰ φόρεσα κ᾽ ἐγὼ γιὰ μιὰν ἀγάπη πού ᾽χα.

Ἡ γραῖα ἔκειτο ἐπὶ τῆς κλίνης καθ᾽ ὅλην τὴν ἑβδομάδα τῶν Παθῶν, γογγύζουσα, ρέγχουσα, φωνάζουσα. Ἐβεβαίου ὅτι «ἀγγελιάστηκε», καὶ ἡτοιμάζετο ν᾽ ἀποθάνῃ. Ἐπέβαλλεν εἰς τὴν Μόρφω, τὴν μικρὰν ἐγγονήν της, ἐργασίας ἀνωτέρας τῆς ἡλικίας τοῦ πτωχοῦ κορασίου. Αἴφνης, ἐν μέσῳ δύο γογγυσμῶν, ἔβαλλε μίαν φωνήν, κ᾽ ἔκραζεν ἀπὸ τῆς κλίνης πρὸς τὴν ἐκτὸς τοῦ ἰσογείου θαλάμου πηγαινοερχομένην καὶ ὑπηρετοῦσαν παιδίσκην.

― Μὴ χύνῃς στὴν αὐλὴ τὰ νερά, χίλιες φορὲς σ᾽ τὸ εἶπα· στὸ νεροχύτη!

Κ᾽ ἐπανελάμβανε τοὺς ἀφορήτους στεναγμούς, ἐπιτείνουσα μάλιστα αὐτοὺς ὁσάκις τυχὸν πτωχὴ γειτόνισσα, μὴ τολμῶσα νὰ εἰσέλθῃ, ἤρχετο δειλῶς μέχρι τῆς θύρας καὶ ἠρώτα πῶς ἦτο ἡ ἀσθενής.

Βεβαίως ἡ γρια-Κομνιανάκαινα ἔπασχεν, ἀλλ᾽ ἴσως ἐμεγαλοποίει τὸ πρᾶγμα. Ἔκλαιε «τὰ νιᾶτα της», ἔλεγεν ὅτι δὲν θὰ προφθάσῃ νὰ κάμῃ ἐφέτος Πάσχα. Ἡ γειτόνισσα ἡ Μηλιὰ ἐβεβαίου ὅτι ἡ γραῖα εἶχε καὶ «κομπόδεμα», ἀλλὰ ποῦ νὰ ἐμβάσῃ μέσα καμμίαν ἐκ τῶν γειτονισσῶν της! Ἐλλείψει ἄλλης ἀσθενείας ἦτον ἱκανὴ ν᾽ ἀποθάνῃ ἀπὸ τὴν φιλαργυρίαν της. Δὲν ἐβάστα ἡ ψυχή της νὰ δώσῃ κάτι τι εἰς μίαν πτωχὴν γυναῖκα διὰ νὰ τὴν «κοιτάξῃ», κ᾽ ἐπέβαλλε βαρεῖαν ἀγγαρείαν εἰς τὴν Μόρφω, ὀκταετῆ παιδίσκην. Ἐνίοτε παρελήρει ἀληθῶς. Εἶτα ἔβαλλεν ἀγρίαν κραυγήν. Ἔκραζε τὴν παιδίσκην νὰ τὴν σκεπάσῃ μὲ τὸ σινδόνιον, ἀλλὰ χωρὶς αὕτη νὰ τὴν ἐγγίσῃ κἂν, ἡ γερόντισσα ἔβαλλε τοιαύτην ὠρυγήν, ὥστε ἡ μικρὰ κατετρόμαζε.

Ὁ καπετὰν Κομνιανὸς ἔλειπε μὲ τὸ γολετί, κ᾽ ἐπεριμένετο νὰ ἔλθῃ. Εἶχε μαζί του, μὲ τὸ γολετί, καὶ τὸν πρωτότοκον υἱόν του, τὸν Γεώργην, δωδεκαετῆ παῖδα. Τοῦτο ἦτο ἕνας ἀπὸ τοὺς καημοὺς τῆς γραίας, ὅτι ἔμελλε ν᾽ ἀποθάνῃ, ὡς ἔλεγε, χωρὶς νὰ ἐπανίδῃ τὸν υἱόν της, καὶ τὸν ἔγγονόν της τὸν μεγάλον, ὅστις ὡμοίαζε τόσον μὲ τὸν μακαρίτην τὸν πάππον του. Καὶ ποῖος νὰ τῆς σφαλήσῃ τὰ μάτια; Αἱ ἀνεψιαί της, ὑπανδρευμέναι καὶ αἱ δύο, τῆς ἐβαστοῦσαν κακίαν διὰ κάτι κληρονομικὰς διαφοράς, καὶ δὲν ἔσπασαν τὸ πόδι «οἱ λαχταρισμένες, οἱ ἀχρόνιαστες!» νὰ ἔλθουν νὰ τὴν ἰδοῦν. Οὕτω τῆς ἤρχετο καὶ αὐτῆς ν᾽ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸ πεῖσμα των, ν᾽ ἀποθάνῃ χωρὶς νὰ τῆς φιλήσωσι τὴν χεῖρα.

Ἰατρός, ποῦ νὰ εὑρεθῇ; Εἶχεν αὐτὴ νὰ πληρώνῃ; Αὐτὴ ὤφειλε νὰ κάμνῃ οἰκονομίαν διὰ τὰ ὀρφανά, καὶ δὲν ἔπρεπε νὰ φθείρῃ τὸ βιὸ τοῦ υἱοῦ της εἰς γιατρικὰ καὶ δὲν ξέρω τί. Ψευτογιάτρισσες! Κάμε τὴ δουλειά σου! Ἔχουν ἐμπιστοσύνην τώρα αὐταὶ αἱ γυναῖκες; Ὁ κόσμος ἐχάλασε, τί τὰ θέλεις; Ἔμβαζε αὐτὴ μὲς στὸ βιό της, μὲς στὰ καλά της, ξένην γυναῖκα; Τῆς ἤρχετο νὰ ἐπαναλάβῃ πρὸς τὰς γειτονίσσας τὴν ἰδίαν κραυγήν, δι᾽ ἧς ἀπεδίωκε τὸ πάλαι παρείσακτον ὄρνιθα ἀπὸ τὸν ὀρνιθῶνά της. Ξού, ξένη!

Ὣς τόσον ἐπεθύμει νὰ ἤρχετο ὁ υἱός της διὰ νὰ τὸν νυμφεύσῃ, νὰ τοῦ δώσῃ καὶ τὴν εὐχήν της. Σαράντα χρόνων ἄνθρωπος, κι ὁ κόσμος εἶναι πέλαγο, σὰν ἐκεῖνο ποὺ ἀρμένιζε τώρα. Πῶς νὰ περάσῃ τὴ ζωήν του χωρὶς νὰ ἔλθῃ εἰς δεύτερον γάμον; Καὶ τὰ ὀρφανά, καὶ αὐτὰ θὰ εὕρισκαν μητέρα, μίαν καλὴν οἰκοκυρά, ἥτις ἀπὸ τώρα ἐπροσφέρετο μάλιστα νὰ ἔλθῃ νὰ τὴν ὑπηρετήσῃ εἰς τὴν ἀσθένειάν της. Ἀλλ᾽ ἡ γραῖα Κομνιανάκαινα, μὴ θέλουσα νὰ παραβῇ τὴν ἀρχήν της, δὲν ἐδέχθη τὴν ἐκδούλευσιν.

Τὸ βέβαιον εἶναι ὅτι ἐκ τῶν δύο ὀρφανῶν, ἡ Μόρφω, ἥτις εἶχεν ἤδη αἴσθησιν, ἂν δὲν ἐπεθύμει ν᾽ ἀποκτήσῃ μητέρα, ἐνθυμεῖτο κ᾽ ἐλυπεῖτο τὴν μητέρα της. Ὁ Εὐαγγελινός, νήπιον τριετίζον ἐν καιρῷ τῆς συμφορᾶς, οὔτε ἤξευρε τίποτε οὔτε ἐνθυμεῖτο. Ἔκλαιε μόνον ὅταν ἡ μάμμη τὸν ἐβίαζε νὰ φορέσῃ τὸν κατάμαυρον σάκκον του. Ἡ Μόρφω, λευκὴ καὶ ὠχρὰ μὲ τὰ μαῦρα φουστανάκια της, καὶ μὲ τὸ μαῦρον μανδήλιον τὸ σκεπάζον τὰ ξανθά της μαλλιά, ἦτο κατηφής, κ᾽ ἐνθυμεῖτο τὸ περυσινὸν Πάσχα, ὅταν ἔζη ἡ μήτηρ της. Ἡ ἀτυχὴς γυνὴ εἶχεν ἀποθάνει ἀπὸ τὴν γένναν της, τὸ παρελθὸν θέρος, καὶ τὸ βρέφος μετ᾽ αὐτῆς. Τώρα ἡ κορασὶς εἶχεν ἀντὶ τῆς καλῆς καὶ πονετικῆς μητρὸς τὴν μάμμην μὲ τὴν ἀφόρητον παραξενιά της, ἥτις, ἐνῷ ἐβεβαίου ὅτι ὅλα τῆς ἐπόνουν, κεφαλή, λαιμός, χεῖρες, πόδες, πλάται, κοιλία, μέση καὶ τὰ λοιπά, πνιγομένη δὲ ἀπὸ τὸν βῆχα καὶ γογγύζουσα δυνατὰ καὶ βάλλουσα κραυγὰς ἀγρίας, ἐφείδετο νὰ δώσῃ εἰς ἰατροὺς καὶ φάρμακα, αἴφνης ἠγείρετο, ὑποβαστάζουσα τὴν κοιλίαν της, ἐξήρχετο μέχρι τῆς θύρας, ἔρριπτε βλέμμα εἰς τὸν ἐκτὸς κόσμον, κ᾽ ἔλεγεν:

― Ἄχ! τί γλυκιὰ πού ᾽ν᾽ ἡ ζωή!

Πέρυσι, ὤ! πέρυσι, τὴν Μεγάλην Πέμπτην πρωί, ἀφοῦ ἐγύρισαν ἀπὸ τὴν ἐκκλησίαν, ὅπου εἶχον μεταλάβει ὅλοι, ἡ καλὴ καὶ προκομμένη μήτηρ, καίτοι ἄγουσα ἤδη τὸν ἕβδομον μῆνα τῆς ἐγκυμοσύνης της, ἀνεσφουγγώθη καὶ ἤρχισε νὰ βάπτῃ ἐν τῇ χύτρᾳ τὰ αὐγά, μὲ ριζάρι, κιννάβαρι καὶ ὄξος. Εἶτα ἤρχισαν νὰ ἔρχωνται εἰς τὴν θύραν ἀνὰ ζεύγη τὰ παιδία τῆς πολίχνης, μὲ τὸν ὑψηλὸν καλάμινον σταυρὸν στεφανωμένον μὲ ρόδα εὐώδη καὶ μὲ μήκωνας κατακοκκίνους, μὲ δενδρολίβανον καὶ μὲ ποικιλόχροα ἀγριολούλουδα, μὲ τὸν ἀποσπασθέντα ἀπὸ τ᾽ Ὀχτωῆχι χάρτινον Ἐσταυρωμένον εἰς τὸ μέσον τοῦ σταυροῦ, καὶ μὲ ἐρυθρὸν μανδήλιον κυματίζον, μέλποντα τὸ ᾆσμα:

Βλέπεις ἐκεῖνο τὸ βουνὶ μὲ κόκκινη παντιέρα;
Ἐκεῖ σταυρῶσαν τὸ Χριστό, τὸν πάντων βασιλέα.

Σύρε μητέρα μ᾽, στὸ καλὸ καὶ στὴν καλὴ τὴν ὥρα,
κ᾽ ἐμένα νὰ μὲ καρτερῇς τὸ Σάββατο τὸ βράδυ·
ὅταν σημαίνουν ἐκκλησιὲς καὶ ψέλνουνε παπάδες,
τότες καὶ σύ, μαννούλα μου, νά ᾽χῃς χαρὲς μεγάλες.

Καὶ τί χαρὲς μεγάλες τῷ ὄντι, τί χαρὲς δι᾽ ὅλα τὰ παιδία! Καὶ ἡ καλὴ ἡ μήτηρ της προθυμότατα ἔδιδεν ἀνὰ δύο ἀρτιβαφῆ αὐγὰ εἰς ὅλα τὰ παιδία· δύο αὐγὰ κόκκινα, καὶ τί εὐτυχία! τί νίκη! ἐνῷ ἡ μάμμη ἐφώναζεν ὅτι ἀρκετὰ παιδία ἦλθαν, καὶ ἀρκετὰ ἐτραγούδησαν, καὶ ὅτι ἔπρεπε νὰ ὑπάγουν καὶ ἀλλοῦ.

Μετὰ ταῦτα ἡ μήτηρ ἤρχισε νὰ ζυμώνῃ, καὶ ἔπλασεν ἀρκετὲς κουλοῦρες μετ᾽ αὐγῶν διὰ τὸν σύζυγον, ἐπιδημοῦντα τότε, διὰ τὴν πενθεράν της, δι᾽ ἑαυτήν, διὰ τὲς κουμπάρες, ὡς καὶ μικρὲς «κοκῶνες» διὰ τὴν Μόρφω, διὰ τὸν Εὐαγγελινόν, διὰ τ᾽ ἀναδεξίμια της καὶ διὰ τὰ πτωχὰ παιδιὰ τῆς γειτονιᾶς.

Κ᾽ ἐπειδὴ ὁ μικρὸς Εὐαγγελινὸς ἔκλαιε, λέγων ὅτι δὲν εἶναι ἀρκετὰ μεγάλη ἡ κοκώνα του, ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ ἔδιδεν ἄλλην νὰ ἐκλέξῃ, ἀλλ᾽ αὐτὸς δὲν ἡμέρωνεν οὔτε ἤθελε νὰ ταιριασθῇ. Τὸ βέβαιον εἶναι ὅτι τὰς ἤθελεν ὅλας διὰ τὸν ἑαυτόν του. Καὶ τότε ἡ μήτηρ τὸν ἐπαρηγόρει λέγουσα ὅτι «τὸ Σαββάτο τὸ βράδυ θὰ ᾽ρθῇ ἡ κουρούνα (κρά, κρά!), νὰ φέρῃ τὸ τυρὶ καὶ τὸ κρέας (τσί, τσί!), καὶ τότε νὰ ἰδῇς χαρὲς ὁ Βαγγελινός, σὰν ἀκούσῃ κρά, κρά! τὴν κουρούνα νὰ χτυπᾷ τὸ παραθύρι. Πάρε Βαγγελινὲ τὸ τυρί, πάρε καὶ τὸ τσὶ-τσί, νὰ φᾶτε!» Καὶ ὁ μικρὸς ἐψέλλιζε καὶ αὐτός, «θὰ ᾽θῇ κουούνα νὰ φέῃ τοὺ τσὶ-τσί», καὶ συνάπτων τὰς χεῖρας, δακτύλους μεταξὺ δακτύλων, κατὰ τὸ ὑπόδειγμα τῆς μητρός, ἐμιμεῖτο τὴν εἰρεσίαν τῶν πτερῶν τῆς κουρούνας, τὸ δὲ παιδίον τῆς γειτόνισσας τῆς Μηλιᾶς, ἑξαετές, ἄνιπτον, ρακένδυτον, ὀκλάζον εἰς μίαν γωνίαν, κρατοῦν τὴν κοκώνα του, τὴν ὁποίαν ἐσκέπτετο ἂν δὲν ἦτο καλὸν νὰ τὴν φάγῃ τώρα ποὺ εἶναι ζεστή, διεμαρτύρετο γρυλλίζον καὶ λέγον: «Ναί! θὰ ᾽ρθῇ ἡ κουρούνα! ἀμ᾽ δὲ θὰ ᾽ρθῇ!»

Καὶ τὴν Μεγάλην Παρασκευήν, περὶ τὴν δύσιν τοῦ ἡλίου, ἡ μήτηρ ὡδήγησε τὰ δύο παιδία εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν, ὅπου, ἀφοῦ ἔκαμαν τρεῖς γονυκλισίας πρὸ τοῦ ἀνθοστεφοῦς κουβουκλίου, ἠσπάσθησαν τὸν μυρόπνουν Ἐπιτάφιον, τὸ ἀργυρόχρυσον Εὐαγγέλιον μὲ τ᾽ ἀγγελούδια, καὶ τὸν Σταυρὸν μὲ τ᾽ ἀνθρωπάκια καὶ τὶς Παναγίτσες (τί χαρά, τί δόξα!), καὶ εἶτα ἐπέρασαν τρὶς ὑπὸ τὸν ὑψηλόν, μεγαλοπρεπῆ Ἐπιτάφιον, ὁ δ᾽ Εὐαγγελινὸς (ὅλα τὰ ἐνθυμεῖτο ἡ μικρὰ Μόρφω) ἀνέτρεψεν ἐξ ἀπροσεξίας πήλινον ἀμφορέα μὲ ὕδωρ, ἐξ ἐκείνων οὓς θέτουσιν ὑπὸ τὸν Ἐπιτάφιον πρὸς ἁγιασμόν, διὰ νὰ μεταχειρισθῶσι τὸ ὕδωρ εἰς τὸ καματηρό, ἤτοι τοὺς μεταξοσκώληκας, καὶ εἰς ἄλλας χρείας, αἱ νεώτεραι μυροφόροι, γυναῖκες διακαῶς ποθοῦσαι «νὰ ξενυχτίσουν τὸν Χριστὸν» μένουσαι ἄγρυπνοι ἐν τῷ ναῷ πέραν τοῦ μεσονυκτίου, διότι ἡ ἀκολουθία τοῦ Ἐπιταφίου ψάλλεται ἐκεῖ τὸ Μέγα Σάββατον, περὶ ὄρθρον βαθύν. Ὁ ἀμφορεὺς πεσὼν ἐθραύσθη, ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἧς ἦτο κτῆμα ὠργίσθη, καὶ εἶπεν ὅτι τὸ ἔχει «σὲ κακό της». Τότε ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ Εὐαγγελινοῦ, ἀφοῦ ἐπέπληξεν αὐστηρῶς τὸ παιδίον, πειραχθεῖσα εἶπεν ὅτι «ἂν εἶναι κακό, ἂς εἶναι γιὰ μένα!» Καὶ τὴν πτωχὴν δὲν τὴν ηὗρε ὁ χρόνος!

Τὸ Μέγα Σάββατον δέ, μικρὸν μετὰ τὰ μεσάνυκτα, ἡ μήτηρ ἐξύπνισε τὸν Εὐαγγελινὸν καὶ τὴν Μόρφω, κ᾽ ἐνῷ ἐσήμαιναν διὰ μακρῶν οἱ κώδωνες, ἐπῆγαν εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν, ὅπου ἐψάλη τὸ «ὦ γλυκύ μου ἔαρ» καὶ ἄλλα ἀκόμη παθητικὰ ᾄσματα. Εἶτα οἱ πιστοὶ ὅλοι μὲ ἀνημμένας λαμπάδας ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὕπαιθρον, ὑπὸ τὸ ἀμαυρωθὲν φέγγος τῆς φθινούσης σελήνης, ἐνῷ ἡ αὐγὴ ἔλαμπεν ἤδη ροδίνη καὶ ξανθή, προπέμποντες τὸν Ἐπιτάφιον ἀγλαόφωτον μὲ σειρὰς λαμπάδων. Καὶ ἡ αὔρα πραεῖα ἐκίνει ἠρέμα τοὺς πυρσούς, χωρὶς νὰ τοὺς σβήνῃ, καὶ ἡ ἄνοιξις ἔπεμπε τὰ ἐκλεκτότερα ἀρώματά της εἰς τὸν Παθόντα καὶ Ταφέντα, ὡς νὰ συνέψαλλε καὶ αὐτή, «ὦ γλυκύ μου ἔαρ, γλυκύτατόν μου τέκνον!» καὶ ἡ θάλασσα φλοισβίζουσα καὶ μορμύρουσα παρὰ τὸν αἰγιαλὸν ἐπανελάμβανεν, «οἴμοι γλυκύτατε Ἰησοῦ!» Τὰ δὲ παιδία προπορευόμενα τῆς πομπῆς, μεγαλοφώνως ἔκραζον: Κύριε ἐλέησον! Κύριε ἐλέησον! Ὁ Εὐαγγελινὸς ἐψέλλιζε μετὰ τῶν ἄλλων: Κύιε ἔησον! Κύιε ἔησον!

Καὶ ὕστερον, ὅταν ἀνέτειλεν ὁ ἥλιος τοῦ Μεγάλου Σαββάτου, διαλύων τὴν ἀπαραίτητον ὁμίχλην τῆς Μεγάλης Παρασκευῆς, (ἥτις καθιστᾷ μελαψὴν μιγάδα τὴν ἡμέραν καὶ παμμέλαιναν ἀράβισσαν τὴν νύκτα), ὁ Εὐαγγελινὸς ἐξύπνησεν ἀπὸ τὰ βελάσματα τοῦ ἀρνίου, τὸ ὁποῖον ἡτοιμάζετο νὰ σφάξῃ διὰ τὴν οἰκογένειαν τοῦ καπετὰν Κομνιανοῦ ὁ γείτονας Νικόλας, ὁ σύζυγος τῆς Μηλιᾶς. Ὁ Εὐαγγελινὸς καὶ ἡ Μόρφω ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ προαύλιον. Τί ὡραῖον, τί ἥμερον, τί λευκόμαλλον ποὺ ἦτο τὸ ἀρνί! Καὶ πῶς ἐβέλαζε (μπέ! μπέ!) τὸ καημένο. Ἐν τούτοις δὲν ἐφαίνετο πολὺ δυσαρεστημένον, διότι ἔμελλε νὰ σφαγῇ. Καὶ ἄλλος Ἀμνὸς ἄμωμος, Ἀμνὸς αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου, καὶ ἄλλος ἀτίμητος Ἀμνὸς ἐσφάγη…

Τὴν ἑσπέραν ἔφερεν οἴκαδε ὁ πατὴρ τὰς πασχαλινὰς λαμπάδας, ὡραίας, λεπτάς, περιτέχνους. Τί χαρά! τί θρίαμβος! φαντασθῆτε ὡραίας μικρὰς λαμπάδας, μὲ ἄνθη τεχνητά, μὲ χρυσόχαρτα. Ὁ Εὐαγγελινὸς ἤθελε νὰ πάρῃ τὴν τῆς ἀδελφῆς του, λέγων, ὅτι ἐκείνη εἶναι μεγαλυτέρα. Ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ τὴν ἔδωκεν, ἀλλ᾽ ὁ μικρὸς τὴν ἔσπασε, ἐκεῖ ποὺ ἔπαιζε μὲ αὐτήν, ἔσπασε καὶ τὴν ἰδικήν του, καὶ ὕστερον ἔβαλε τὰ κλάματα. Ὁ πατὴρ τοῦ ἠγόρασεν ἄλλην, ἀφοῦ τὸν ὑπεχρέωσε νὰ ὑποσχεθῇ ὅτι δὲν θὰ τὴν πιάσῃ εἰς τὴν χεῖρα, ἕως τὰ μεσάνυκτα, ὅταν θὰ ὑπάγουν εἰς τὴν Ἀνάστασιν. Ὁ μικρὸς ἀπεκοιμήθη κλαίων καὶ χαίρων.

Μετὰ τὰ μεσάνυκτα, ἀφοῦ ἔγινεν ἡ Ἀνάστασις, καὶ ἤστραψεν ὁ ναὸς ὅλος, ἤστραψε καὶ ἡ πλατεῖα ἀπὸ τὸ φῶς τῶν κηρίων, τὰ παιδία ἤρχισαν νὰ καίουν μετὰ κρότου σπίρτα καὶ μικρὰ πυροκρόταλα ἔξω εἰς τὸ πρόναον, καί τινες παῖδες δεκαετεῖς ἐπυροβόλουν μὲ μικρὰ πιστόλια, ἄλλοι ἔρριπτον ἐντὸς τοῦ ναοῦ ἐπὶ τῶν πλακῶν τοῦ ἐδάφους τὰ βαρέα καρφία μὲ τὰ καψύλια καταπτοοῦντες καὶ σκανδαλίζοντες τὰς πτωχὰς γραίας, αἵτινες, μεθ᾽ ὅλον τὸν διωγμὸν ὃν ἐκίνουν κατ᾽ αὐτῶν τὴν Μεγάλην Ἑβδομάδα κατ᾽ ἔτος οἱ ἐπίτροποι, ἀξιοῦντες νὰ περιορίσωσιν αὐτὰς εἰς τὸν γυναικωνίτην, οὐχ ἧττον ἐπέμενον καὶ παρεισέδυον ἐντὸς τοῦ ναοῦ ἀριστερά, εἰς τὴν μίαν κόγχην. Εἷς δ᾽ ἐπίτροπος τῆς ἐπάνω ἐνορίας, ἄνθρωπος προοδευτικός, βλέπων ὅτι ὅλοι οἱ ἐθελονταὶ ψάλται, νεανίαι εἰκοσαετεῖς, ἐφοίτων κατὰ προτίμησιν εἰς τὴν κάτω ἐκκλησίαν, εἰς δὲ τὴν ἐπάνω ἠναγκάζοντο νὰ ψάλλωσιν οἱ ἱερεῖς, τί ἐσοφίσθη; Πιάνει καὶ ἀποσπᾷ ἀπὸ τὸν γυναικωνίτην τὰ καφάσια, τὰ δικτυωτά, δι᾽ ὧν ἐφράττοντο τέως αἱ γυναικεῖαι μορφαὶ ἀπὸ τῆς ὄψεως τῶν ἀνδρῶν, καὶ ἀφήνει τὸν γυναικωνίτην ἄφρακτον. Τότε διὰ μιᾶς ὅλοι οἱ εὐλαβεῖς καὶ μουσόληπτοι νεανίσκοι ἀφῆκαν τὴν κάτω ἐκκλησίαν ἔρημον ψαλτῶν κ᾽ ἔτρεξαν ὅλοι εἰς τὴν ἐπάνω.

Εἶτα τὰ μικρὰ παιδία καί τινες παιδίσκαι τετραετεῖς, μὲ τὰς κομψὰς ποικιλτὰς λαμπάδας, ἐτάχθησαν ἀνὰ τὸν χορόν, περὶ τὰ δύο ἀναλόγια, καὶ παρὰ τὸ εἰκονοστάσιον, καὶ ἤρχισαν νὰ θορυβῶσι, νὰ παίζωσι, νὰ στάζωσιν εἰς τοὺς λαιμοὺς ἀλλήλων, καὶ νὰ τσουγκρίζωσι τὰ αὐγά των. Καὶ ἓν παιδίον ἑξαετές, πονηρότερον τῶν ἄλλων (ἦτο ὁ υἱὸς τῆς Μηλιᾶς τῆς γειτόνισσας) εἶχε πλαστὸν αὐγὸν εἰς τὸν κόλπον του, πωρώδη λίθον στρογγυλευμένον κοκκινοβαφῆ, καὶ δι᾽ αὐτοῦ ἔσπαζε τὰ αὐγὰ ὅλων τῶν παιδιῶν, καὶ τὰ ἔπαιρνε, κατὰ τὴν συμφωνίαν, καὶ τὰ ἔτρωγε.

Μία παιδίσκη καὶ εἷς παῖς, πενταετής, ἤρχισαν νὰ φιλονικῶσι περὶ τοῦ τίνος ἡ λαμπάδα ἦτο εὐμορφοτέρα.

―Ὄχι, ἡ δική μου ἡ λαμπάδα εἶναι καλύτερη.

―Ὄχι, ἡ δική μου.

―Ἐμένα ὁ πατέρας μ᾽ τὴν ἐδιάλεξε, κ᾽ εἶναι πλιὸ καλή.

―Ἐμένα ἡ μάννα μ᾽ τὴν ἐστόλισε μοναχή της.

― Καὶ ξέρει νὰ κάμῃ λαμπάδες ἡ μάννα σ᾽;

―Ὄχι, δὲ ξέρει; Σὰν τὴ δική σ᾽!

― Τέτοια παλιολαμπάδα!

― Ναί, παλιολαμπάδα;… νά!…

― Νά κ᾽ ἐσύ!

― Νά κι ἄλλη μιά!

Καὶ ἤρχισαν νὰ τύπτουν ἀλύπητα τὰς κεφαλὰς ἀλλήλων μὲ τὰς λαμπάδας των, ἑωσοῦ ἔβαλαν τὰ κλάματα καὶ οἱ δύο.

Τὸ ἀπόγευμα πάλιν, ἀφοῦ ἐψάλη ἡ Β´ Ἀνάστασις κ᾽ ἔγινεν ἡ Ἀγάπη, ἐξῆλθαν ὅλοι εἰς τὴν πλατεῖαν κ᾽ ἐθεῶντο τὴν πυρπόλησιν τοῦ Ἑβραίου. Τί ἄσχημος καὶ τί εὐμορφοκαμωμένος ποὺ ἦτον ὁ Ἑβραῖος! Εἶχε μίαν χύτραν ὡς κεφαλήν, εἶχε καὶ λινάρι ὡς γένειον. Ἔφερε καὶ ζεῦγος γυαλιὰ (ἡ Μόρφω τὰ ἐνθυμεῖτο ὅλα), ὅμοια μ᾽ ἐκεῖνα ποὺ φορεῖ ἡ γραῖα μάμμη ὅταν ράπτῃ ἢ ἐμβαλώνῃ τὰ παλαιὰ ροῦχά της. Εἶχε κ᾽ ἕνα σακκούλι ἢ πουγγὶ κρεμασμένον εἰς τὸ ἀριστερὸν πλευρόν του. Ἐφόρει μακριά, μακριὰ φορέματα, παρδαλά, ραβδωτά! Καὶ ἀφοῦ τὸν ἐκρέμασαν ὑψηλὰ ὑψηλά, ἕως ἑπτὰ ὀργυιὰς ἐπάνω, ἤρχισαν οἱ ἄνδρες νὰ τὸν ματιάζουν*, νὰ τὸν τουφεκίζουν ὅλοι, ἑωσότου τὸν ἔκαυσαν.

Καὶ ὕστερον ἡ μήτηρ ἔστρωσε τὴν τράπεζαν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν, καὶ παρέθεσε τὰ αὐγὰ τὰ κόκκινα, τὸ τυρί, ποὺ εἶχε φέρει ἡ κουρούνα, καὶ τὸ ἀρνὶ τὸ ψημένο, καὶ τὰ παιδία ἐκάθισαν εἰς τὴν τράπεζαν καὶ ἤρχισαν νὰ τσουγκρίζουν τὰ αὐγά των. Τί χαρά! τί ἀγαλλίασις!

Ἐφέτος, δηλαδὴ κατὰ τὸ ἔτος ἐκεῖνο τῆς δυστυχίας διὰ τὰ δύο ὀρφανά, δὲν ἦτο πλέον ἐκεῖ οὔτε ὁ πατήρ των, ὅστις ἔλειπεν, οὔτε ἡ μήτηρ των, ἥτις ἐπῆγε μακρύτερα ἀκόμη. Ἀντὶ τῶν δύο ἦτο ἡ γηραιὰ μάμμη, ρογχάζουσα ἐπὶ τῆς κλίνης καὶ γογγύζουσα. Ἀντὶ τῶν κοκκίνων αὐγῶν, ἦσαν αἱ φλέγουσαι ἐκ τοῦ πυρετοῦ παρειαί της. Ἀντὶ τῶν ἐπιχρύσων λαμπάδων, ἦσαν οἱ δύο τρεμοσβήνοντες καὶ βλοσυροὶ ὀφθαλμοί της. Ἀντὶ τῆς ἀθῴας χαρᾶς, ἀντὶ τῆς ἀφάτου εὐτυχίας τοῦ παιδικοῦ Πάσχα, ἦτο ἡ λύπη ἡ βαρεῖα, ἡ ἀνεπανόρθωτος συμφορά.

Εὐτυχῶς ἡ γρια-Κομνιανάκαινα δὲν ἀπέθανε, καὶ ὁ υἱός της ἔφθασεν ἀπόπασχα μὲ τὸ γολετί, καὶ ἤρχισε νὰ καλλωπίζηται καὶ νὰ στρίβῃ τὸν μύστακα ἀποβλέπων εἰς δεύτερον γάμον. Ἀλλά, διὰ τὰ δύο παιδία, τάχα θὰ ἐπανήρχετο πάλιν ἡ χαρὰ ἐκείνη, θ᾽ ἀνέτελλεν ἐκ νέου γλυκεῖα ἡ παιδικὴ Πασχαλιά; Διὰ τὸν Εὐαγγελινὸν ἴσως, διὰ τὴν Μόρφω ὅμως ποτέ. Αὕτη ᾐσθάνετο τὴν ἀπουσίαν τῆς μητρός της καὶ ἤξευρεν ὅτι δὲν ἔμελλε νὰ τὴν ἐπανίδῃ πλέον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.

Γλυκεῖα Πασχαλιά, ἡ μήτηρ τῆς χαρᾶς! Γλυκεῖα μήτηρ, τῆς Πασχαλιᾶς ἡ ἐνσάρκωσις!

Ἀλλ᾽ ὁ Χριστὸς ὑπεσχέθη νὰ πίῃ μὲ τοὺς ἐκλεκτούς του καινὸν τὸ γέννημα τῆς ἀμπέλου ἐν τῇ βασιλεία τοῦ Πατρός Του, καὶ οἱ ὑμνωδοὶ ἔψαλλον: «Ὦ Πάσχα τὸ μέγα καὶ ἱερώτατον, Χριστέ! δίδου ἡμῖν ἐκτυπώτερον σοῦ μετασχεῖν, ἐν τῇ ἀνεσπέρῳ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς βασιλείας Σου!»

Report on the comprehensive economic policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic constitutes an unprecedented challenge with very severe socio-economic consequences. We are committed to do everything necessary to meet this challenge in a spirit of solidarity.
A coordinated and comprehensive strategy is necessary to deal with health emergency needs, to support economic activity and to prepare the ground for the recovery. This strategy should combine short, medium and long-term initiatives, taking account of the spill overs and interlinkages between our economies and the need to preserve confidence and stability.
Several measures have already been taken at the national and EU levels, as set out in the statement of the Eurogroup in inclusive format of 16 March. A subsequent letter of the President of the Eurogroup of 24 March outlined further elements of policy response under consideration. The European Council, in its statement of 26 March, invited the Eurogroup to present proposals on the economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic within two weeks. Replying to the Leaders’ mandate, this report takes stock of actions taken thus far and outlines a comprehensive and coordinated economic response.

Coordinated actions taken so far at the level of the Member States, the EU and the euro area

Since the onset of the crisis, Member States have continuously stepped up efforts to support the economy.
A timely, temporary and targeted discretionary fiscal stimulus is being provided in a coordinated manner. Significant public resources are directed to strengthen the healthcare sector and civil protection mechanisms and to support affected workers and economic sectors. To date, the aggregate amount of Member States’ discretionary fiscal measures amounts to 3% of EU GDP, a threefold increase since 16 March, on top of the significant impact of automatic stabilisers.
Furthermore, Member States have so far committed to provide liquidity support for sectors facing disruptions and companies facing liquidity shortages, consisting of public guarantee schemes and deferred tax payments, which are now estimated at 16% of EU GDP, up from 10% on 16 March.
The Ministers of Finance stand ready to take further measures as needed, as developments unfold.
Flexibility in EU rules. On 23 March, Ministers of Finance agreed with the assessment of the Commission that the conditions for the use of the general escape clause of the EU fiscal framework, a severe economic downturn in the euro area or the Union as a whole, are fulfilled. This offers the flexibility necessary to the national budgets to support the economy and to respond in a coordinated manner to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall fiscal guidance will be provided within this framework and as part of a streamlined European Semester exercise. We welcomed the Commission’s decision to issue a specific temporary state-aid framework to expedite public support to companies, while ensuring the necessary level playing field in the Single Market as well as the recent extension of the framework to cover support for research, testing and production relevant in the fight against the COVID 19 pandemic. We also welcome the Commission’ guidance on the use of all the flexibilities offered by the EU public procurement framework in this emergency situation, issued on the 1st of April.
Use of the EU budget. We welcome the proposals by the Commission to make best use of existing EU budget resources to fight the crisis. The proposal for a Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative was approved by the European Parliament and the Council and is in force as of the 1st of April. This will allow the use of EUR 37 billion under cohesion policy to address the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, the scope of the Solidarity Fund was broadened to include major public health crises. Starting from the 1st of April, this allows the hardest hit Member States to get access to financial support of up to EUR 800 million in 2020.
Monetary Policy. We welcome the resolute action taken by the European Central Bank to support liquidity and financing conditions to households, businesses and banks, which will help to preserve the smooth provision of credit to the economy. On 18 March, the ECB decided to launch a EUR 750 billion Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme (PEPP), to expand the range of eligible assets under the corporate sector purchase programme (CSPP) and to ease the collateral standards. These measures are aimed at ensuring that all sectors of the economy can benefit from supportive financing conditions that enable them to absorb the Covid-19 shock.
Financial Stability: We welcome the guidance provided by supervisory authorities to financial institutions on the interpretation and application of the regulatory requirements in the current exceptional circumstances. We also welcome the release of capital buffers. To overcome the financing pressures faced by firms and households, making full use of the flexibility provided for in the regulatory framework is essential. We will continue to monitor closely the evolution of the situation and to coordinate European and national measures. Where necessary, we stand ready to take further actions, including legislative measures, if appropriate to mitigate the impact of Covid-19.

Additional crisis response instruments and preparing the ground for the recovery

At this critical juncture, we are ready to step up the EU response to support, bolster and complement efforts made so far. We are committed to ensure the conditions for an adequate response to the crisis in every EU Member State. In that context, measures envisaged by the European institutions should be implemented in light of the severity of the economic consequences of the pandemic on individual Member States.
EU budget flexibility. We welcome the Commission’s proposals regarding the further temporary flexibility in the use of EU funds, such as allowing transfers between funds, regions and policy objectives, abandoning national co-financing requirements and supporting vulnerable members of society. This will help to mobilise effectively the EU budget to face the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Emergency Support. We agreed that a dedicated COVID-19 instrument to support the financing of emergency aid, through the provision of grants, is necessary, to first and foremost reinforce our healthcare systems. In this context, we welcome the Commission proposal of 2 April to re-activate the Emergency Support Instrument in the context of the COVID-19 outbreak. This instrument can at this stage provide support of EUR 2.7 billion from EU budget resources. Its firepower can be strengthened rapidly, through additional voluntary contributions from Member States. We call on Member States to explore ways to further reinforce the Emergency Support Instrument in the context of the legislative process.
Strengthening EIB activities. We welcome the initiative of the EIB Group to create a pan-European guarantee fund of EUR 25 billion, which could support EUR 200 billion of financing for companies with a focus on SMEs, throughout the EU, including through national promotional banks. We invite the EIB to operationalize its proposal as soon as possible and stand ready to put it in place without delay, while ensuring complementarity with other EU initiatives and the future Invest EU programme. This initiative is an important contribution to preserving the level playing field of the single market in light of the national support schemes.
Safety nets in the EU and EA. Safety nets are in place in the euro area and the EU. In the euro area, the ESM is equipped with instruments that could be used, as needed, in a manner adapted to the nature of the symmetric shock caused by COVID 19. We propose to establish a Pandemic Crisis Support, based on the existing ECCL precautionary credit line and adjusted in light of this specific challenge, as a relevant safeguard for euro area Member States affected by this external shock. It would be available to all euro area Member States during these times of crisis, with standardised terms agreed in advance by the ESM Governing Bodies, reflecting the current challenges, on the basis of up-front assessments by the European institutions. The only requirement to access the credit line will be that euro area Member States requesting support would commit to use this credit line to support domestic financing of direct and indirect healthcare, cure and prevention related costs due to the COVID 19 crisis. The provisions of the ESM Treaty will be followed. Access granted will be 2% of the respective Member’s GDP as of end-2019, as a benchmark. With a mandate from the Leaders, we will strive to make this instrument available within two weeks, while respecting national procedures and constitutional requirements. The credit line will be available until the COVID 19 crisis is over. Afterwards, euro area Member States would remain committed to strengthen economic and financial fundamentals, consistent with the EU economic and fiscal coordination and surveillance frameworks, including any flexibility applied by the competent EU institutions. The Balance of Payments Facility can provide financial support to Member States that have not adopted the euro. It should be applied in a way which duly takes into account the special circumstances of the current crisis.
SURE. In the spirit of solidarity and in light of the exceptional nature of the COVID -19 crisis, we agree on the need to establish, for the duration of the emergency, a temporary loan-based instrument for financial assistance under Article 122 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. We will strive to make the instrument operational as soon as possible. In this context, we welcome the Commission proposal of 2 April to set-up a temporary instrument supporting Member States to protect employment in the specific emergency circumstances of the COVID-19 crisis. It would provide financial assistance during the time of the crisis, in the form of loans granted on favourable terms from the EU to Member States, of up to EUR 100 billion in total, building on the EU budget as much as possible, while ensuring sufficient capacity for Balance of Payments support, and on guarantees provided by Member States to the EU budget. The instrument could primarily support the efforts to protect workers and jobs, while respecting the national competences in the field of social security systems, and some health-related measures. This proposal should be taken forward without delay in the legislative process. The Member States’ position on this emergency instrument does not pre-judge the position on future proposals related to unemployment insurance. Consistent with its legal basis, access to the instrument will be discontinued once the COVID-19 emergency has passed.
We agree that a coherent strategy in the EU is needed to support Member States’ efforts to return to a normal functioning of our societies and economies and to promote a relaunch of economic activity and investment to ensure sustainable growth.
Recovery Fund. In this context, we also agreed to work on a Recovery Fund to prepare and support the recovery, providing funding through the EU budget to programmes designed to kick-start the economy in line with European priorities and ensuring EU solidarity with the most affected member states. Such a fund would be temporary, targeted and commensurate with the extraordinary costs of the current crisis and help spread them over time through appropriate financing. Subject to guidance from Leaders, discussions on the legal and practical aspects of such a fund, including its relation to the EU budget, its sources of financing and on innovative financial instruments, consistent with EU Treaties, will prepare the ground for a decision.
Upcoming MFF. The next EU Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) will play a central role in the economic recovery. It will have to reflect the impact of this crisis and the size of the challenges ahead, by setting the right priorities, to allow Member States to effectively address the fallout of the coronavirus crisis, to support the economic recovery, and ensure that cohesion within the Union is maintained through solidarity, fairness and responsibility. We welcome the Commission’s intention to adapt its MFF proposal to reflect the new situation and outlook.
Roadmap for Recovery. Work is ongoing on a broader Roadmap and an Action Plan to support the recovery of the European economy through high quality job creation and reforms to strengthen resilience and competitiveness, in line with a sustainable growth strategy. It should put in place the conditions to relaunch our economies whilst promoting economic convergence in the EU and reducing any fragmentation resulting from the crisis, including through the rapid restoration of the full functionality of the Single market. The President of the Commission and the President of the European Council, in consultation with other institutions, including the ECB, have started work to this end. The Eurogroup stands ready to contribute and support this endeavour.
Today we are engaged in an effort to safeguard the health and lives of European citizens and to tackle the immediate economic challenge. This includes the fiscal means Member States need to finance the necessary measures. The recovery of the European economy poses a big challenge. We will act together in solidarity and we will deliver. This includes the necessary progress in strengthening the European Union.

Next steps

The Eurogroup will pursue the work needed taking into account the intention of the Council Presidency to take the legislative proposals forward without delay
